"Vegetable Garden at Angola Prison"

Col. Roland Sylvester

The 300 acre Vegetable Garden at Louisiana State Penitentiary, commonly known as Angola, has provided fresh and nutritious bounty of numerous types of vegetables and fruit for the kitchen as part of the meals for residents. A short history of the garden, including the cultivation, harvest and processing of various crops through the years as well as the challenges experienced by the forces of nature, location and funding will be presented.

Reflections in the Garden is a monthly "lunch and learn" series presented by the Friends of LSU AgCenter Botanic Gardens. The lectures are held on the first Monday of the month at noon at the Botanic Gardens. Because of limited seating, registration is required, and tickets are free to Friends Members and $10 for non-members.

Reflections takes place in-person at the Ione Burden Conference Center and online via Microsoft Teams. All members will receive a link to the Reflections live stream even if they register for in-person attendance. Friends members also have access to the Reflections recordings.
